EVERYTHING ABOUT THE AREA
Marli-Brandenbaum is a district in the eastern part of Lübeck, Germany, and is one of the historical suburbs of the city. The area has a rich history, including the establishment of a cemetery and chapel dedicated to the patron saint of travelers, St. Gertrud, in the 14th century. The current St. Gertrud Church was consecrated in 1910. Marli, a part of the district, has a fascinating history dating back to the Seven Years' War when the French Count Chasot became the commander of the Lübeck garrison. He developed the area into a beautiful estate with gardens, orchards, and even a silk worm breeding operation. The former estate manager's house still stands as a reminder of those times. Brandenbaum, another part of the district, has a history dating back to the 13th century when it was merged with Nyghendorp to form a manor. The name Brandenbaum became common in the 18th century, and the area served as a border and customs station to Mecklenburg. The nearby Palinger Heide was a popular excursion spot for the people of Lübeck. The district also has several parks, including the Stadtpark, Drägerpark, and Eschenburgpark, each with its own unique features and history. The Burgtorfriedhof cemetery and the adjacent Ehrenfriedhof are notable for their historic gravestones and memorials.
