Insider tip in the north: The Damp Estate

It could hardly be further north: the small town of Damp is just under 20 kilometers to the north-east of Eckernförde Bay. The alternation between the hilly landscape and nearby beaches, the picturesque sailing harbors and the cliffs right by the sea make the entire region a true and varied gem. Surrounded by the Schlei and the Baltic Sea, on the Schwansen peninsula, is the estate of Alexander zu Reventlow: Gut Damp.

In addition to agriculture, the Damp estate is known above all for its particularly beautiful scenery and architecture. On the traditional farmstead, whose large thatched half-timbered barns are surrounded by a moat, you are greeted by an imposing gatehouse. Linden trees lead straight to the manor house, which dates back to 1597 and stands at the head of the courtyard.

One of the barns houses the "Kuhhaus" restaurant, which reopened in July 2019. It was particularly important to Alexander zu Reventlow to breathe new life into the restaurant opened by his parents in 1995. After various renovations, this has now been achieved and the area around Eckernförde, which has been particularly flourishing for a few years, has gained a gastronomic feel-good place.

The restaurant with its rustic, rural atmosphere now seats 90 people and guests can sit outside on the courtyard lawn next to free-range chickens as well as in the warm interior of the barn. This is where northerners meet city dwellers, friendly service meets inspiring guests and culinary traditions meet modern demands in the best sense of the word. The patron, Norbert Stark, creates traditional dishes at the highest level in the Kuhhaus. So no food trends are served here, but seasonal, regional cuisine that never goes out of fashion. Because it always tastes good - always locally sourced and therefore always fresh on the table!

However, the Kuhhaus restaurant is not the only vision that the owner of the estate is putting into practice with manager Jana Blümel and the entire estate management team. Next year, vacation apartments with optional hotel service will be built on his beautiful estate under the direction of Hamburg architect Frank Pawlik. Alexander zu Reventlow wants other people to experience his love of the land and the region. Completion is planned for the end of 2020, and our Engel & Völkers Eckernförde team will be happy to inform you in good time.
So we can look forward to it! A first look at the construction site is best rounded off directly in the Kuhhaus with a freshly fried fish and a glass of "Casa de la Vaca", always with a fresh Baltic Sea breeze blowing around your nose.
