James Farm, one of the most modern farms in Schleswig-Holstein, is located in the municipality of Hörup, around 25 km west of Flensburg. Here, all the products sold in the store are produced, processed and refined in-house. The 23-strong team always pursues the vision of using new techniques and clever processes to make high-quality, sustainably produced food economically attractive.
It goes without saying that regionality, animal welfare, sustainability and ecological action are very important and go hand in hand for the operators of James Farm and are an essential part of their concept. Traditional, regional animal breeds such as the Husum protest pig, Duroc and woolly pigs live on the farm in an open stable with plenty of space to roam. In addition to 800 chickens, there are also 20 dairy cows and 200 German Angus cattle.
All agricultural produce is processed in the farm's own dairy and abattoir. This not only eliminates long transportation routes, but also ensures high-quality artisanal processing at all times. This allows James Farm to offer its customers an exquisite, regional product portfolio, ranging from cheese and meat specialties to fruit and vegetables to bread and baked goods from the region.
Visitors can take a closer look at how the many products are made during a visit to the farm. Transparency is also an important part of the farm culture. Interested parties can take guided tours of the farm, animals and production in different group sizes - and, if they wish, take part in a tasting afterwards.
In an interview with Owe Brodersen, Managing Director of James Farm, we find out more about the history and structure of the farm, the variety of products and the many events that regularly take place on the farm.

Engel & Völkers Schleswig-Holstein: How long has James Farm been around, how did the concept for the farm come about and how did you set it up? Where does the name "James Farm" come from?
James Farm: James Farm was opened in September 2021. The concept was created with the idea of supplying our partner hotels from our own farm and thus determining the production of the food ourselves. It is a joint concept between farmers and hotel operators.
The name James Farm came about due to the proximity to the Flensburg hotel "Das James".
Engel & Völkers Schleswig-Holstein: You place particular emphasis on regionality and sustainability. How and where is this noticeable on your farm?
James Farm: The animals whose products we refine are raised on the farm and fed with the feed we produce ourselves. The fields are fertilized exclusively with the animals' droppings and through targeted crop rotation in the fields.
The finished products are marketed exclusively to end customers in the partner hotels in Schleswig-Holstein and the surrounding area.
Engel & Völkers Schleswig-Holstein: In your view, what significance does a farm like James Farm have for the region?
James Farm: James Farm creates an opportunity to purchase locally produced and processed food. This avoids unnecessary transportation.
In addition, such a concept creates jobs in a rather declining area of food production.
Engel & Völkers Schleswig-Holstein: You also work with several hotels, including the James Hotel in Flensburg and the Beach Motels in St. Peter-Ording and Heiligenhafen. What does this collaboration look like? Does it also result in new ideas, for example for products?
James Farm: The Bretterbude in Heiligenhafen, the Lighthouse in Büsum and the Alte Stahlwerk in Neumünster are also among the partners. They are supplied with our products on a weekly basis. As we are the hotel's own farm, there is a close exchange between butchers, the cheesemaker and the hotel chefs. Everyone can contribute their ideas and give direct feedback on product development. Individual products are also sometimes produced especially for a chef.
Engel & Völkers Schleswig-Holstein: You regularly host lots of great events on your farm, such as the cheese workshop for children, where an individual cheese is made from the farm's own milk. What other events for young and old are available for a trip to your farm?
James Farm: We offer regular tours of the farm. Recently we have also started an After Work Farm Club at regular intervals. Here you can end the day in a relaxed atmosphere and sample the products in the James Farm Shop.
There are also various seasonal events at which we present our farm. Of course, the products are always in the foreground here too.
Engel & Völkers Schleswig-Holstein: Where do your visitors* mainly come from? Are your products only available in your farm store or is it possible to buy them elsewhere or enjoy your delicacies?
James Farm: The majority of visitors and customers come from the region. But there are also many vacationers and hotel guests among them. They take the opportunity to find out about the origin of the food from the restaurant.
At the moment, the products are only available in the restaurants of our partner hotels and in the James Farm Shop. We will certainly expand this in the future.
Engel & Völkers Schleswig-Holstein: Your variety of products is impressive. Are you planning any further additions or cooperations with other regional businesses?
James Farm: We would like to grow vegetables, herbs and fruit on the farm in the future. We are also thinking about further refining some of the raw materials. For example, our grain can be used to produce baked goods or beer on site.
We are always open to cooperation in this area. Other regionally produced products could also be added to the range in the store.
