Bellinzona is located in the central part of the canton of Ticino. Following the merger of several municipalities in 2017, it is the largest of the Swiss towns with over 30,000 inhabitants and the third-largest municipality in the canton of Ticino, covering an area of 165.45 sqm. The municipality includes large forest, agricultural and mountain areas, and some hamlets are separated from the urban area. Some of the most important roads and motorways in Switzerland converge and branch out in Bellinzona, as does the railway network, which provides connections to Lugano and Locarno, to the north to the Swiss cantons and to the south to Milan and Lombardy in just a few minutes. Road connections to the north and south are easy to reach via the Bellinzona Nord motorway junction. The history of the town with its castles attracts many tourists, especially in summer, and nature lovers can enjoy walks and hikes on foot or by bike in the surrounding area.
