Bellinzona is located in the central part of the canton of Ticino. Following the merger of several municipalities in 2017, it is the largest of the Swiss towns with over 30,000 inhabitants and the third-largest municipality in the canton of Ticino, covering an area of 165.45 sqm. The municipality includes large forest, agricultural and mountain areas, and some hamlets are separated from the urban area.
