The town of Varese is located on the shore of the lake of the same name. It is called Garden City because of the abundance of greenery that can be found within the municipality, to which undoubtedly contribute the gardens and parks of the many villas that were built here. The town of Varese is located in a characteristic position, at the foot of the Sacro Monte di Varese, part of the field of flowers and home to an astronomical observatory. Varese is situated on seven hills: the Colle di San Pedrino (402 m), the Colle di Giubiano (407 m), the Colle Campigli (453 m), the Colle di Sant'Albino (406 m), the Colle di Biumo Superiore (439 m), the Colle di Montalbano (411 m) and the Colle dei Miogni (492 m). The area of the municipality lies between 238 and 1,150 meters above sea level. The winter of Varesino suffers little from the mitigating influence of Lake Maggiore and the other smaller lakes of the province. Lowest temperatures in late autumn and winter often fall below freezing, albeit only a few degrees. It is the low night temperatures that create a different climate from the southern areas of this city. As in other pre-Alpine towns in Lombardy, fog is rare. Since 1960, it has been home to the only Italian headquarters of the European School for the Children of European Officials of the Joint Research Centre. Milan Malpensa and Lugano Agno airports are about 30 minutes away. The shores of Lake Maggiore are a 20-minute drive away.
