La Torre de la Horadada is a town located by the sea, a district of the municipality of Pilar de la Horadada (22,000 inhabitants), in the province of Alicante, Spain. It is a coastal town, which has recently experienced its development thanks to tourism. It owes its name to two factors: the first, the 16th century watchtower; and the second, the place where the tower is located: Punta de la Horadada (the ‘horadada’ is due to the fact that this projection of land to the sea has small caves made by the water, that is to say, it is perforated, that is to say, holed). Torre de la Horadada has several beaches that have a blue flag. Among its beaches are Los Jesuitas, El Conde, El Puerto and the unique and small Cala de la Lombriz with fine sand and crystal clear waters. The legend, only known by the locals, tells that the beaches and their inhabitants were frequently attacked by pirates, and that thanks to the system of watchtowers and the use of seashells as a warning system, it was possible to put an end to them. The leader of the pirates had his hand pierced with an incandescent iron, which gave the area its name: La Torre de la mano Horadada, which later evolved into ‘La Torre de la Horadada’, its current name. The Watchtower belonged to the coastal watch system, and was built in 1580 on top of an earlier tower. It marked the traditional southern limit of the Kingdom of Valencia, and during the 19th century it was used for optical telegraph signals. It is very well connected to the airports of San Javier (15 km) and Alicante (60 km) by the A7, and has several shopping centres nearby, such as Zenia Boulevard and Dos Mares.
