Atalaya, is the name given to the watch towers built every kilometre along the Costa Del Sol by the Moors during their 800-year occupation of southern Spain, as a means to keep watch over the then Phoenician enemy ships. Many of these (Atalaya) towers can still be seen along the coast today, some 700 years later. Atalaya is a high end residential area belonging to the municipality of Estepona and which rests on the border with the municipality of Marbella. Atalaya is divided into two sections, the northern section above the A7 road and the beach-side section below it. Atalaya is about 2 kilometres west of San Pedro and 10 kilometres west of Marbella town and 10 kilometres west of Atalaya is Estepona town. Six kilometres up the hill, is the village of Benahavis which is famous for it’s gastronomic excellence. This is golfing country at it’s best with the Atalaya Golf course and it´s country club house within Atalaya, but there are also many other golf courses very nearby, for enthusiasts in need of variety. Atalaya is also very close to good schools, many shops, bars and restaurants, making this a perfect place to enjoy a holiday or to live all year round.
