Located in the extreme south of the province, in the Vega Baja region, bordering the Region of Murcia, it is the southernmost municipality in the Valencian Community and has 22,597 inhabitants (INE 2021). Until 1986, it belonged to the municipality of Orihuela. Despite being a relatively young municipality, in its more than 30 years of existence as an independent municipality, projects have been undertaken to provide the town with the necessary services. Economically, its development is due to two fundamental pillars: agriculture and residential tourism, without forgetting the commercial and services sector. It also owes much to the privileged climate that keeps the area in a kind of "constant spring", with average temperatures of 18ºC, gentle breezes and the sun shining more than 3,200 hours a year.
