Conde Duque is a lively, bohemian and casual neighborhood, with an emerging and modern commerce but with a vintage air. Its apparent tranquility and calmness contrast with the bustle and fervent activity of the Gran Vía, the recently renovated Plaza de España and Princesa Street, which mark its limits to the south. The real name of the monumental building of Conde Duque, which imprints personality to the whole area, is the Royal Barracks of the Corps Guards, an elite corps that was dedicated to the custody of the monarchs. Its construction began in 1717 by order of Philip V, the first Bourbon king, who commissioned its design to the great Madrid architect Pedro de Ribera. Of its more than 200 meters of façade, its Churrigueresque style façade, carved in stone and located in front of the Plaza de Guardias de Corps, stands out.
