The ancient parish of Getxo is a municipality in the coastal province of Biscay, in the Basque Country. It is located on the right bank of the estuary of Bilbao, at the Ibaizábal-Nervión river. It is part of the Great Bilbao and the Bilbao metropolitan area. Las Arenas and Neguri emerged in the late nineteenth century as a residential area for the basque industrial bourgeoisie. The district is a residential area with luxury homes. Neguri´s name comes from the fusion of two basque words: Negua and Hiri (winter and city respectively).
