SiEl Mercat (in Spanish El Mercado) is a neighborhood in the city of Valencia (Spain), belonging to the Ciutat Vella district. It is located in the center of the city and borders to the north with El Carmen, to the east with La Seu, to the south with Sant Francesc and to the west with El Pilar. One of the neighborhoods in the center of Valencia. The Mercat neighborhood is the closest to the Central Market, which is a notable piece of modernist architecture. The neighborhood is not that style, but rather humble homes mixed with the occasional palace. This space was a suburb outside the walls in Arab Valencia, which had its wall on the current Caballeros street, and where some remains remain integrated into the existing buildings. Until the 14th century it remained like this, being integrated with the construction of the later wall in the 14th century. Next to the current market there was a mosque, which gave way around 1240 to a church of Santos Juanes, but not in its current configuration. Today the Mercat Central is one of the most desired neighborhoods to live in the Historic Center of Valencia with all the services and excellent communications.
