La Torre de la Horadada is a coastal town located in the municipality of Pilar de la Horadada (population 22,000) in the province of Alicante, Spain. It's a seaside town that has recently experienced significant development thanks to tourism. Its name is derived from two factors: firstly, a 16th-century watchtower; and secondly, the location of the tower, Punta de la Horadada ('horadada' refers to the fact that this coastal outcrop has small caves formed by the water, meaning it is perforated, or has holes). Torre de la Horadada boasts several Blue Flag beaches. Among them are Los Jesuitas, El Conde, El Puerto, and the unique and small Cala de la Lombriz, with its fine sand and crystal-clear water. A legend, known only to locals, tells of the beaches and their inhabitants frequently suffering pirate attacks, but thanks to a system of watchtowers and the use of seashells as a warning system, these were eventually brought to an end. The pirate leader had his hand pierced with red-hot iron, giving the area its name: La Torre de la mano Horadada, which later evolved into 'La Torre de la Horadada', its current name. The watchtower belonged to a coastal defense system and was built in 1580 atop an earlier tower. It marked the traditional southern border of the Kingdom of Valencia, and in the 19th century, it was used for optical telegraph signaling. The area is very well connected to San Javier Airport (15 km) and Alicante Airport (60 km) via the A7 motorway, and several shopping malls are nearby, such as Zenia Boulevard and Dos Mares.
