Chueca is an area of the neighborhood of Justicia, in the Centro district of the Spanish city of Madrid. It has no administrative entity. It takes its name from the square and the Chueca subway, dedicated to the composer Federico Chueca, and is bounded on the north by the street of Fernando VI, south by the Gran Vía, east by the street of Barquillo and west by the Hortaleza and Fuencarral. At the end of the 20th century it became the neighborhood of the homosexual community of Madrid. In the 1980s, some of the first gay bars were opened in the area. In the 1980s, some of the first LGBT-friendly venues in Madrid opened in the area (Café Figueroa, Black & White, Sachas or the Berkana bookstore) and it progressively went from being a marginal space to achieving the open cosmopolitan character that has given the neighborhood the recognition of its internationally famous cultural attraction, without losing part of its original "castizo" (traditional) air. The area is also home to the Plaza del Rey and the Plaza de Pedro Zerolo. One of the biggest annual tourist events in Chueca are the Gay Pride celebrations, held every year at the beginning of the summer.
