Malasaña: The neighborhood with the most bohemian and modern neighbors of the city. The district of Malasaña forms an irregular square flanked by the Gran Vía in the south, the Fuencarral street in the east, the Carranza street in the north and, finally, the San Bernardo street in the west. It owes its name to Manuela Malasaña, heroine of the Madrid uprisings of May 2, 1808 against the French troops. This historical fact has great importance in the neighborhood since its nerve point, the Plaza del Dos de Mayo, is located in the site of the old Artillery Park of Monteleón where there was an uprising led by Luís Daoíz and Pedro Velarde. In the current square there is an arch of the old barracks and the monument in honor of these two captains. Malasaña is also closely linked to the Movida, the cultural and social revolution that emerged in Madrid during the 1980s and had its epicenter in this neighborhood of Madrid.
