Pozuelo de Alarcón is a city and municipality located in the Community of Madrid, situated to the west of the metropolitan area of the capital. With an area of 43.2 km² and a population of 84,989 inhabitants in 2016, it ranks as the thirteenth most populous municipality in the Madrid region. Located in an area of gentle undulations, with ample natural spaces supplied by numerous streams, whose wells give the municipality its name, the origins of the current nucleus of Pozuelo de Alarcón date back to the time of the Reconquista. Since then and until the mid-19th century, it served as the main supplier of all kinds of goods to Madrid, including those of agricultural origin and those from the tanning industry. Over the last century and a half, Pozuelo de Alarcón has witnessed a continuous flow of vacationers and affluent classes who found tranquility and proximity to the capital in this municipality. They have been joined, since the 1960s and due to economic growth and improved communications, by strata of all kinds, including young populations, who have transformed Pozuelo into a relevant and dynamic city within its region, becoming the locality with the highest per capita income in the country.
