This region, whose name comes from the Arabic etymology "al-Saqra", indicates the fertility of this farming area. It is a flat, gently undulating land dotted with castles. In La Sagra, a region with an extremely serious and sober landscape that has historically been the breadbasket of the province of Toledo, cereals and legumes predominate, and to a lesser extent, vineyards and olive groves. The town of Illescas is located in the north of the province of Toledo, 35 km from Madrid and Toledo. The streets and houses of the municipality were for a long time a place of passage and lodging on the Court's journeys between Madrid and Toledo. Illescas could not be left out of the Don Quixote Route that crosses the lands of La Mancha. This popular route crosses Illescas on its ninth stage, on the way to Carranque. A city of residence for kings and nobles, and of extraordinary heritage, reflected in unique monuments such as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity, built in 1588 in the Plaza de los Infanzones. The Sanctuary was decorated by Doménico Theotocopuli "El Greco" and was considered by him to be "his most perfect work". We can also admire the spectacular Mudejar Tower, called "La Giraldilla de La Sagra" which belongs to the parish of Santa María, being one of the few monuments of the Muslim-Christian transition.
