The Vorstadt neighborhood was established around 1572, when the first Kieler citizen was granted the right to settle outside the densely built Altstadt area. The development of the Vorstadt area began with irregular construction along existing field roads leading up to Kuhberg. The Vorstadt was originally known as Kuhstede, which later became Vorstadt. The village of Kuhberg is still reflected in the street name Kleiner Kuhberg. The boundaries of the Vorstadt neighborhood are defined by Rathausstraße and Holstenbrücke to the north, Kieler Förde to the east, Raiffeisenstraße, Sophienblatt, and Ringstraße to the south, and Schülperbaum and Sandkuhle to the west.
