Viggiù is a municipality in the north-eastern part of the province of Varese, more precisely in Valceresio, at the foot of Mount Orsa, with about 5,300 inhabitants. Its history begins in very distant times: finds from the Roman age bear witness to it. Many are the treasures of Viggiù. Among them is the historic centre, unique of its kind, characterized by typical court houses, with entrances adorned by artistic stone portals, where the stonemasons' workshops were located. The famous "Pietra di Viggiù" was one of the many stones extracted from the surrounding hills; it was used as a building and decoration material and in the past this led the territory to be a place of great artistic importance. This characteristic has made Viggiù known as the village of the “Picasass”, since in the past, passing through the streets, you could only hear the bells of hammers beating the stone. Numerous are also the churches enriched by the works of local artists.
