It is called the "Garden City" due to the abundance of greenery found within the municipality, thanks in part to the gardens and parks of the many villas built here. Varese is situated in a unique position at the foot of the Sacro Monte di Varese, which is part of the Campo dei Fiori Massif and home to an astronomical observatory. Varese rests on seven hills: Colle di San Pedrino (402 m), Colle di Giubiano (407 m), Colle Campigli (453 m), Colle di Sant'Albino (406 m), Colle di Biumo Superiore (439 m), Colle di Montalbano (411 m), and Colle dei Miogni (492 m). The municipality's territory ranges from 238 to 1,150 meters above sea level. The winter in Varese is only slightly influenced by the moderating effects of Lake Maggiore and the other smaller lakes in the province. Late-autumn and winter minimum temperatures often drop below zero, albeit by only a few degrees. It is these low nighttime temperatures that create a different climate compared to areas south of the city. As in other pre-Alpine Lombard cities, fog is a rare phenomenon. Since 1960, Varese has hosted the only Italian branch of the European School, established for the children of European officials at the Joint Research Centre. The Milan Malpensa and Lugano Agno airports are about 30 minutes away, while the shores of Lake Maggiore can be reached by car in 20 minutes.
