The municipality of Besano is a very quiet inhabited and residential center near the shores of Lake Ceresio or Lake Lugano. The etymological origin of the name is unclear; some derive the name from the fact that in ancient times a renowned fair was held in the area twice a year, thus the town would have been called “Bis-in-anno,” while some historians derive it from the Celtic-Ligurian root “Bes,” meaning wooded height. A walk from the center of the municipality, without any particular difficulty, allows you to reach the Colle di S. Martino, which overlooks the town and offers a panoramic view of the entire Valceresio, Lake Ceresio, and the Varese and Swiss Prealps. The municipality offers public services such as a gym, a municipal library, and primary and secondary schools. The Porto Ceresio train station, just 5 minutes from the center of Besano, connects the provincial capital, Varese, with a travel time of 20 minutes, while the regional capital, Milan, is 1 hour and 13 minutes away. The Swiss border, at the Porto Ceresio customs, is only 4 km away, while the customs at Lavena Ponte Tresa is 12 km away. The center of the provincial capital, Varese, and the motorway to Milan are 12 km away. The shores of Lake Maggiore can be easily reached in 25 km. Malpensa International Airport is 55 km away but is easily reachable by train from the Porto Ceresio railway station, which also connects to the main cities in the Swiss canton of Ticino.
