10 steps for basement renovation: a new living space

A cellar can be much more than a place to store boxes and garden tools. With a touch of creativity and the right planning, the cellar can in fact become a living space in its own right. Whether you need an extra bedroom, an office or a guest room, renovating the cellar can be the ideal solution. In this article, you will discover how to turn your cellar into a living area in just ten steps.

1. Planning

Before you start renovating, try to imagine the end result and think about what criteria your cellar should meet. Consider any structural limitations, as well as the space available.

2. Drainage

Careful drainage of the cellar is essential to prevent moisture and mould growth. Check first whether your cellar is indeed already moisture-proof or whether you need to integrate specific systems or drainage sumps.

3. Insulation

To keep your cellar warm and save energy, insulation is essential. Suitable materials for this include polystyrene, cellulose or mineral wool.

4. Electrical installation

To use the cellar as a living space, it is important to check and, where necessary, replace the electrical installation. Remember to provide a sufficient number of sockets and connections for lights.

5. Heating

For a pleasant temperature in the cellar, it is advisable to install a heating system. There are various systems to choose from, ranging from underfloor heating to radiators and a heat pump.

6. Flooring

in the cellar, the floor should be covered with practical and robust materials. Tiles, laminate or PVC are particularly suitable for this purpose. The space can later be customised and made even cosier by adding carpets.

7. Walls

the walls of the cellar should also be protected against moisture. In such cases, it is better to opt for wallpaper or rough plaster.

8. Doors and windows

In order to let enough natural light into the cellar, we recommend that you gather detailed information on the installation of doors and windows. If the cellar is to be used as a living space instead of a simple unheated storage room, you will also need to comply with the provisions of the national building energy code. Finally, the windows should be water-resistant to ensure sufficient protection in the event of flooding.

9. Plumbing

If you are planning a bathroom or kitchen, do not forget the installation of sanitary installations. In particular, check the condition of the water and drainage connections and replace them where necessary.

10. Cleaning and furnishing

Once you have completed all the building work, all that remains is to thoroughly clean the cellar and continue with the furnishing. Choose the colour, wallpaper, furniture and accessories to suit your taste and decorate the space to your liking.

In conclusion

Renovating a cellar can take a lot of time and money, but the end result can repay you for all your efforts. You will indeed have more space and a cellar that can be used in a versatile way. In the long term, such an intervention will also increase the value of your property.

But be careful: in order to achieve a satisfactory result, it is important to carry out detailed planning and ensure that all necessary building and technical requirements are adequately met.
