Via Etnea is the main street of Catania's historic center, serving as the city's cardo, a straight north-south axis stretching approximately three kilometers. It runs from Piazza del Duomo to Tondo Gioeni and was established only at the end of the 17th century following the devastating earthquake of January 11, 1693. Over the centuries, its name changed from via Stesicorea to its current designation, via Etnea. Along its length, six churches were built, starting from the Cathedral in Piazza Duomo, followed by the Basilica della Collegiata, the Church of the Minoriti, the Church of San Biagio, the Church of the Santissimo Sacramento al Borgo, and the Church of Sant'Agata al Borgo. Many noble palaces and public buildings of Catania were also erected along this iconic street. In the 20th century, via Etnea extended beyond the crossroads with the main avenues, reaching Piazza Cavour - known to locals as "Il Borgo" - home to the Carrara marble Fountain of Cerere, affectionately nicknamed "a tapallara" by older inhabitants of Catania. Continuing along, we find another gem of the city: the University Botanical Garden. Designed by architect Mario Di Stefano and inaugurated in 1858, it covers approximately 16,000 square meters. The garden sits partially on volcanic soils (Roman-era lava) and partially on alluvial land, constrained within its 19th-century layout due to urban development. It hosts unique collections, including succulents, palms, and native Sicilian plants. Our "promenade" concludes at Tondo Gioeni, where in the 1950s, Catania's ring road was constructed. Today, this area is home to the Mirone Fountain, a striking focal point that leads into Parco Gioeni, the city's northernmost park.
