EnergieverbrauchsausweisCanegrate is a municipality of the metropolitan city of Milan with 12,488 inhabitants. It’s located in Legnanese area, along the course of the Olona River, south of the Varese Alps. It doesn’t include hamlets, however, it can be divided into contrade like the Contrada Baggina, the modern and residential Quartiere Valverde, the Contrada Santa Colomba bordering with Legnano, and the Contrada delle Cascinette. The woods and meadows of Canegrate known as the "Ca' Litta Woods" are part of the Roccolo Park. It as been around since 1991 between Parabiago, Busto Garolfo, Casorezzo, Arluno, Canegrate and Nerviano. It’s covers about 15,000,000 sq. m., and deals with the defense of local fauna, flora and agricultural activities. It is characterized by the presence of native tree species (oak, cherry, Scots pine) and other species introduced by man (locust tree, chestnut, red oak, prunus); There’s a plan to extend it to the WWF Oasis of the Vanzago forest. Canegrate is 22 kilometers from Milan, 29 kilometers from Varese and 26 kilometers from Malpensa Airport. Parabiago is the largest city nearby and it’s only 2 kilometers away. The nearest access to the A8 highway is at Legnano, while for the A4 highway the closest one is at Rho. In a few minutes it’s also easy to reach Strada Statale del Sempione 33. Canegrate has a station along the Domodossola-Milan railway, from which trains on line S5 of the Milan Suburban Railway Service also run. The patron saint's day is August 16, but the celebration is first Monday of September. In the streets of the historic merchants in the village set up their stallsin the streets (it’s a tradition called "Le Bancarelle"). Many families make home-made Canegrate Cake, also called "Black Cake", during the festive week. It’s made with bread, cocoa, raisins and pine nuts.
