Via Boccola is part of the Città Alta district, the most historic and exclusive part of Bergamo, perched on the hills and surrounded by the 17th-century Venetian walls, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. The entire medieval quarter, characterised by streets that have maintained their historical flavour intact, revolves around the Renaissance Piazza Vecchia, where the Palazzo della Ragione, the Civic Tower (also known as the Campanone, which still chimes at 10 p.m. with the 100 strokes that once announced the closing of the four entrance gates to the Walls at night) and the Venetian Contarini fountain stand majestically. The Piazza Vecchia is also overlooked by the Palazzo Nuovo with the Angelo Mai Civic Library inside. Behind the Palazzo della Ragione are other great jewels: the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, with the Baptistery built by Giovanni da Campione next to it, the Cathedral of Sant' Alessandro and the Colleoni Chapel. The picturesque main artery of the district starts in Piazza del Mercato delle Scarpe (where the funicular railway to Città Bassa is located), continues in Via Gombito, with its iconic Tower and passing through Via Colleoni, ends in Piazza della Cittadella.
