Lifestyle, attractions and top things to do in La Mata

Torre La Mata, or simply La Mata is a small village located just 5 kilometres northeast of the town of Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca. La Mata is considered a suburb of the city and is located within the municipality of Torrevieja. With a population of 1.234 inhabitants according to the National Institute of Statistics, La Mata is considered to be a relatively quiet and peaceful locality. Although it is one of the most popular Spanish villages and tourist areas on the Costa Blanca, La Mata still retains a traditional Spanish way of life.
La Mata has an abundance of nature and boasts two natural parks, a salt lagoon, a cove and a wide stretch of beach, all of which give it an unspoilt natural splendour despite its small size. The natural environment of the town and the concentration of salty air from the lagoons contribute to the healthy microclimate of La Mata, which is often recommended by doctors.

Climate of Torre La Mata
The town enjoys 320 days of sunshine a year and average daily temperatures of 18°C. Whilst the summer months of June, July and August can be very hot in many other places, due to the proximity of La Mata to the coast, its daily temperatures average 26°C with the highest peak at only 31°C. La Mata enjoys pleasant summer days and cooler summer nights thanks to its location on the Mediterranean coast and its unique microclimate, which contributes to the abundance of nature.
The winter months in La Mata are also pleasant thanks in large part to the proximity of the sea and its stabilising temperatures. Although winter temperatures can drop, the lowest daily average temperature is just 12°C and yet the days are still sunny. For this reason, the la Mata beach is still very popular during the winter months for those who want to relax on the shores or stroll along the seashore.
Parks and activities
La Mata has three natural public parks that offer an idyllic area for walking, cycling, picnicking or simply exploring and being close to nature:
La Mata Natural Park
This is the natural park of La Mata surrounded by a large salt water lake which forms the La Mata Salt Flats. The park is an official Spanish nature reserve and is protected and preserved by the local government. Due to the presence of the salt lake, the park attracts a wide variety of birds, such as flamingos and water birds such as ducks and geese. The Natural Park of La Mata is also home to many species of wildlife, some of which are endangered. There is a designated picnic area called La Pinada where visitors can relax while enjoying the view under the shade of the pine trees. As it is a nature reserve, there is a visitor centre in the park, with guides who will show you the routes for cycling, walking and the various viewpoints in the area.
Molino del Agua Park
Another park in La Mata is the Molino del Agua Park which is a natural park with a large stream running through it. The water flows from the artificial waterfalls to the various ponds that occupy the whole park, and also to the large pool at the bottom which has a fountain. These water structures make for a lovely and refreshing walk in the park, which actually leads to the seafront promenade near the beach of La Mata. The whole park is also wheelchair accessible.
Pocoyo Park
It is a park and play area for children located on the Dolphin Street and a few metres from the beach.
In addition to the parks and the promenade, La Mata offers bicycle routes throughout the town. These tree-lined cycle paths are well maintained and are distinguished from the main roads. They allow easy access for those who prefer bicycles for transport or to explore the rest of the city.
