The Pfaffengrund is a district in the west of Heidelberg, consisting of residential areas in the south and industrial areas in the north. It is characterized by predominantly cooperative housing and a high proportion of green spaces, which no other district in Heidelberg can surpass. The Pfaffengrund was established in the 1920s as a cooperative residential area for the working class in the style of a garden city. Before 1920, the area of the current district was purely farmland. The name "Pfaffengrund" derives from a medieval field name, although its origin is unclear. The district includes not only the Pfaffengrund area but also a number of other areas, whose names date back to the Middle Ages and have been largely incorporated into street names.
