The canton of Zug - Switzerland's tax haven

Zug is a canton in German-speaking Switzerland and is part of the greater Central Switzerland region (Central Switzerland) and the Zurich metropolitan region. Zug is one of the smallest cantons in Switzerland, but with a population of 126,837 (31 December 2018) and 500 inhabitants per square kilometer, it has a high population density by Swiss standards.

The capital and largest town is the eponymous city of Zug. The canton of Zug is also divided into eleven municipalities:

Baar

  • Location: Baar is - depending on how you look at it - the gateway to Central Switzerland or a link to the neighboring canton of Zurich. The municipality borders on the city of Zug.

  • Size: Approx. 24,600 inhabitants

  • Tax rate: 53 %

  • Infrastructure: The excellent infrastructure in Baar with all major Swiss banks, doctors, shopping facilities, post office and restaurants is very well developed. All types of schools and the International School of Zug/ISZL are also located in Baar. The region offers many green spaces, forests, leisure facilities (including the Lättich outdoor pool) and recreational areas. The excellent accessibility and proximity to major centers such as Zurich and Lucerne are of great economic importance. Zurich and Lucerne are approx. 30 minutes' drive away, Zurich Airport approx. 45 minutes


    Cham

    • Location: Cham, beautifully situated on Lake Zug and close to the city of Zug, is an attractive place to live and work and the third-largest municipality in the canton

    • Size: Approx. 16,000 inhabitants

    • Tax rate: 59 %

    • Infrastructure: The idyllic Villette Park directly on Lake Zug and the renowned St. Andreas Clinic with its medical center deserve special mention. Cham is also known for its numerous sporting and cultural events, as well as its wide range of leisure activities and local recreational opportunities. The primary and secondary schools are in the village, while the grammar school is in Zug and the International School is in Cham itself or in neighboring Hünenberg. Cham has excellent transport links to the cities of Zug, Zurich and Lucerne. It takes about 10 minutes to get to Zug and about 30 minutes to Zurich and Lucerne

Hünenberg

  • Location: The popular municipality of Hünenberg is divided into Hünenberg See, which is located directly on Lake Zug, and Hünenberg Dorf, which is adjacent to the south and west. Thanks to far-sighted planning, the municipality has developed into a preferred place to live with a growing population.

  • Size: Approx. 9,000 inhabitants

  • Tax rate: 65 %

  • Infrastructure: Many well-known companies and the high school campus of the International School have settled in the "Bösch/Rothus" industrial estate. Public primary and secondary schools, leisure facilities and shopping facilities for daily needs, banks and the post office are also located in the village. The city of Zug and Lucerne are very close (approx. 20 minutes' drive). Zurich can be reached in approx. 35 minutes and Zurich Airport in approx. 45 minutes

Menzingen

  • Location: Menzingen is located in the foothills of the Alps above Zug and forms the transition from the canton of Zug to the canton of Zurich in the direction of Schindellegi/Feusisberg. Magnificent views of Lake Zug, the mountains of Central Switzerland and the lovely, green hilly landscape alternate.

  • Size: Approx. 5,000 inhabitants

  • Infrastructure: The protected landscape offers a wonderful recreational and hiking area. Nevertheless, the municipality is well served by public and private transport and has an advanced infrastructure with various shopping facilities, a bakery, a butcher's, a bank, a post office, various restaurants and doctors. The Menzingen cantonal grammar school and the Menzingen public schools enjoy an excellent reputation. Zug can be reached in approx. 15 minutes, Lucerne and Zurich in approx. 40 minutes and Zurich Airport in approx. 50 minutes.

Neuheim

  • Location: Neuheim is a family-friendly village in a rural setting. The village is located away from through traffic and in the middle of green countryside between Baar and Sihlbrugg, on the border with the canton of Zurich.

  • Size: Approx. 2,100 inhabitants

  • Tax rate: 61 %

  • Infrastructure: The manageable size, an active village life and an open population give the municipality a special charm. There is a Volg supermarket for everyday shopping as well as a Raiffeisen and a cantonal bank, a post office, cafés and restaurants. Elementary school and secondary school can be attended in Neuheim itself. The grammar school is located in Zug or Menzingen and the International School in neighboring Baar. Thanks to the convenient location, you can quickly reach Zug (approx. 10 minutes), Lucerne (approx. 40 minutes) or Zurich (approx. 30 minutes, airport approx. 40 minutes).

Oberägeri

  • Location: On the sunny side of life, recharge your batteries above the fog line and still reach the important centers quickly - this is what Oberägeri in the Ägerital offers, approx. 5 minutes from Unterägeri and approx. 15 minutes from Zug.

  • Size: Approx. 7,000 inhabitants

  • Tax rate: 60 %

  • Infrastructure: In addition to beautiful countryside and nature, the municipality offers all the services and infrastructure needed for a relaxed lifestyle. Neighborly contacts, numerous clubs and the new Ägeri swimming pool characterize village life. Public schools are within walking distance of the village. International schools are located in Zug and Baar. Zug is approx. 15 minutes' drive away, Zurich approx. 45 minutes and Zurich Airport approx. 60 minutes

Risch-Rotkreuz

  • Location: The municipality of Risch consists of the four villages of Risch, Buonas, Holzhäusern and Rotkreuz and lies to the west of Lake Zug. The entire area, with well-known company headquarters and beautiful residential areas, is the ideal starting point for private and professional destinations.

  • Size: Approx. 11,000 inhabitants

  • Tax rate: 57 %

  • Infrastructure: Risch-Rotkreuz offers access to life in the city and the countryside. The excellent infrastructure with major Swiss banks, doctors, local and international schools, shopping facilities, post office and restaurants is very well developed. The balanced concept of living, working, education, leisure and recreation in an intact natural environment with Lake Zug, meadows and forests as well as the 18-hole Holzhäusern golf course is being continuously developed and consolidated. Zug and Lucerne can be reached in about 20 minutes by car, Zurich in about 35 minutes and the airport in about 45 minutes, especially as Rotkreuz has its own highway access and good public transport connections.

Steinhausen

  • Location: The municipality of Steinhausen is nestled in the Lorzene plain, not far from Lake Zug, between the city of Zug and the third-largest cantonal municipality of Cham.

  • Size: Approx. 10,100 inhabitants

  • Tax rate: 60 %

  • Infrastructure: The good accessibility by car and public transport make the location of Steinhausen very interesting. The municipality has all the stores for daily needs. Further amenities can be found in the "Zugerland" shopping center and in nearby Zug or Cham (approx. 10 minutes away by car). Primary and secondary school can be attended in Steinhausen. The grammar school is located in Zug and the International School in Cham or nearby Hünenberg. Zurich and Lucerne are approx. 40 minutes away by car, Zurich Airport approx. 50 minutes.

Unterägeri

  • Location: Surrounded by a range of green hills, the village is nestled in a magnificent Alpine foothills landscape on Lake Aegeri, just a 10-minute drive above the town of Zug.

  • Size: Approx. 9,000 inhabitants

  • Tax rate: 60 %

  • Infrastructure: Rich in tradition, Unterägeri also has a modern side. The local infrastructure is excellent and offers shopping facilities, banks and a post office as well as various restaurants, cafés and the well-known seminar hotel. The public schools are located in the town center. International schools are located in Zug and Baar (approx. 10 minutes' drive). The unspoiled nature is an enrichment for the entire Ägerital. In winter, the "Nollen" ski lift is the ideal skiing area for families. In summer, a wide network of hiking trails, the idyllic mini-golf course and the clean Ägerisee for swimming are available to those seeking relaxation. Zurich and Lucerne can be reached in approx. 45 minutes and Zurich Airport in approx. 60 minutes

Walchwil

  • Location: Located directly on Lake Zug, south of Zug and known for its sweet chestnut trees, vines and even fig trees, Walchwil is unique with its mild climate. The municipality is one of the most attractive villages in the canton of Zug and boasts excellent hillside locations with all-round lake views and spectacular views of the Rigi.

  • Size: Approx. 4,000 inhabitants

  • Tax rate: 55 %

  • Infrastructure: The manageable size, an open population (approx. 34% expats) and the spectacular hillside locations give Walchwil a special charm. There is a small supermarket for everyday shopping as well as a Raiffeisen and a cantonal bank, a post office, cafés and restaurants. School can be attended in Walchwil itself up to upper school level. The grammar school is located in Zug and international schools in Zug or Baar. Zug can be reached in approx. 15 minutes, Lucerne in approx. 40 minutes, Zurich in approx. 50 minutes and Zurich Airport in approx. 60 minutes.

City of Zug

  • Location: Zug is a globalized, international small town in the heart of Switzerland and the capital of the eponymous canton of Zug. The city is located on the beautiful Lake Zug and offers proximity to the mountains and major cities such as Zurich and Lucerne.

  • Size: Approx. 31,000 inhabitants

  • Tax rate: 54 %

  • Infrastructure: Zug offers various shopping facilities, boutiques, restaurants, doctors, banks and a post office. Arth (SZ)

  • Location: The municipality of Arth is located in the equally low-tax canton of Schwyz, at the southern end of Lake Zug, nestled between the highest mountain in the canton of Zug, the "Wildspitz", and the excursion and tourist destination of the "Rigi".

  • Size: Approx. 12,000 inhabitants

  • Tax rate: 150 %

  • Infrastructure: Arth-Goldau offers a wide selection of shops, banks, the post office, cafés and restaurants for everyday shopping. Further amenities can be found in the main town of Schwyz.   • Infrastructure: The manageable size of the village makes it a cozy place to live. There is a small supermarket for everyday shopping as well as a Raiffeisen bank, cafés and restaurants. Further shopping facilities are available in neighboring Küssnacht am Rigi (approx. 5 minutes' drive). The elementary school and secondary school are located in Immensee. The upper school is in Küssnacht and the International School is in Hünenberg. The journey to Zug takes about 20 minutes, to Lucerne about 30 minutes, to Zurich about 40 minutes and to the airport about 50 minutes.

Küssnacht am Rigi (SZ)

  • Location: The district of Küssnacht is idyllically situated on the north-eastern arm of Lake Lucerne and at the foot of the majestic Rigi.

  • Size: Approx. 10,000 inhabitants

  • Tax rate: 150 %

  • Infrastructure: The municipality offers a solid selection of stores for everyday needs. Banks, the post office and restaurants can also be found here. All public schools can be attended in the village, the grammar school either in Immensee or in Schwyz. The historic "Hohle Gasse" from Wilhelm Tell's story offers a very special recreational experience and the hiking and winter sports areas Seebodenalp and Rigi as well as the 18-hole golf course Küssnacht am Rigi are right on the doorstep. Lakes Lucerne and Zug also invite you to take a refreshing dip. The journey to Zug, Schwyz or Lucerne takes about 20 minutes, to Zurich about 45 minutes and to Zurich Airport about 50 minutes.

Merlischachen (SZ)

  • Location: The geranium-decorated farmhouses in the village center are the landmark of the geranium village of Merlischachen, which lies on Lake Lucerne between Küssnacht and the Lucerne municipality of Meggen. The magnificent lakeside location with panoramic views from the Rigi to Mount Pilatus delights locals and visitors alike.

  • Infrastructure: There is a village store and a cantonal bank in the village. Further amenities can be found in neighboring Küssnacht and Meggen (approx. 5 minutes' drive).
