The etymology of the toponym "Barcarena" is controversial, with several authors suggesting that it may be a corruption of the toponym "Alcanena." Barcarena is a place whose occupation dates back to the Final Neolithic, with constructions from the Chalcolithic. It is the reference for a known settlement of populations in the place, originating on the top of the western slope overlooking the valley, more than 5,500 years ago, indicating considerable development based on an agro-pastoral economy. Barcarena is a village with centuries of history, located in the valley of the Barcarena stream. The village extends along the east and west banks of the stream of the same name and is flanked by two symmetrical slopes, two hills approximately 130 meters high, located both on the east and west sides of the village, while the entire valley extends from north to south, towards the Tagus estuary, with Cabo Espichel on the horizon and the routes south along the Portuguese maritime coast.
