Consumption certificateNovoli is a medium-sized town about 10 km north of Lecce, known mainly for its strong agricultural vocation, especially in the production of olive oil and wine. Within a short distance from Novoli are both coasts of Salento. To the east is the ‘Adriatic coast’, with places like ‘San Foca’, ‘Torre dell'Orso’ and ‘Otranto’, known for their golden sandy beaches and cliffs. To the west is the ‘Ionian coast’, with seaside towns such as ‘Porto Cesareo’ or ‘Torre Lapillo’, famous for their crystal-clear waters and heavenly beaches. The landscape around Novoli is typical of the Salento: flat, with cultivated fields, centuries-old olive trees and dry stone walls separating agricultural properties. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. This favourable climate has made the area particularly suitable for growing olives and vines. The surrounding countryside is characterised by vast olive groves and vineyards, typical of the Salento landscape. The historical centre is full of buildings in local stone, often made of the characteristic ‘pietra leccese’, a soft and easily worked limestone that gives a warm and bright touch to buildings. One of Novoli's most famous events is the ‘Festa di Sant'Antonio Abate’, held in January. The most spectacular event of the festival is the ‘Fòcara’, an immense bonfire that is lit in honour of the patron saint and attracts thousands of visitors from all over Apulia and beyond. This bonfire is among the largest in Europe and has a strong ritual and symbolic value. In addition to the Feast of Sant'Antonio Abate and the Fòcara, Novoli and its surroundings are characterised by a culture deeply rooted in popular traditions. The local cuisine is one of the most authentic expressions of Salento culture, with dishes based on local products such as fresh fish, seasonal vegetables, homemade pasta (like the famous ‘orecchiette’) and extra virgin olive oil.
