It touches a total of nine municipalities: Varese, Azzate, Bardello, Biandronno, Bodio Lomnago, Buguggiate, Galliate Lombardo, Cazzago Brabbia, and Gavirate. The latter was long the main town overlooking the lake until a large portion of the shores was acquired by the Municipality of Varese, so much so that the lake was once known as Lake Gavirate.
