Consumption certificateRiva del Garda is a town of about 18,000 inhabitants nestled on the northern tip of Lake Garda. Protected by a barrier of mountains, the town enjoys a Mediterranean climate mitigated by the currents of the lake; there grow olive trees, citrus fruits, cypresses, and palms. The extremely varied environment offers endless recreational possibilities and holidays: walking and cycling lakeside, cultural excursions, hiking in the surrounding mountains, natural rock walls for free climbing, boat trips, and a paradise for lovers of windsurfing, sailing, and kitesurfing. Evenings of relaxation and fun are assured by a lively offering of aperitifs along the lakeside, typical restaurants, cultural events, concerts, and art exhibitions. Of ancient Celtic origins, a merchant centre in Roman times, over the centuries the population of Riva del Garda experienced numerous rulers until its annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1919. In the second half of the 19th century, the whole area became a favourite tourist destination of the mitteleuropean élite because of its healthy climate and natural beauty and was visited by many cultural personalities of the time, including Franz Kafka (1909, 1913), the brothers Thomas and Heinrich Mann (1902), Sigmund Freud, Rudolf Steiner and Friedrich Nietzsche. More than 10,000 foreigners stayed here in 1901, while only five years later 37,600 visitors were reported, mostly Austrians and Germans. The tourist development of the area continued until the outbreak of the Second World War. Today, Riva del Garda, together with its lake, hills, and mountains, reaffirms itself as an international tourist centre, always with new things to discover.
