Riva del Garda is a town of about 18,000 inhabitants nestled on the northern tip of Lake Garda. Protected by a barrier of mountains, the town enjoys a Mediterranean climate mitigated by the currents of the lake; there grow olive trees, citrus fruits, cypresses, and palms. More than 10,000 foreigners stayed here in 1901, while only five years later 37,600 visitors were reported, mostly Austrians and Germans. The tourist development of the area continued until the outbreak of the Second World War. Today, Riva del Garda, together with its lake, hills, and mountains, reaffirms itself as an international tourist centre, always with new things to discover.
