Marsala is the largest town in the province of Trapani, both in terms of population and land area. It is known for the landing of Garibaldi and for the production of the famous Marsala wine, which the English deemed better than Port and Madeira, so much so that they began to market it worldwide, securing its success in the first half of the 19th century. Marsala owes its name to the Arabs (Marsa-Allah, port of God), but its original name was Lilybeo, founded by the Romans in the 3rd century AD.
