Rafina lies on the Aegean Sea coast, east of the Penteli mountain and northeast of the Mesogaia plain. It is 25 km (16 mi) east of Athens city centre, 5 km (3 mi) north of Artemida and 7 km (4 mi) south of Nea Makri. Kallitechnoupoli and Neos Voutzas are the two large regional districts of Rafina, west of Marathonos Avenue at the foot of Penteli, where many second home as well as permanent residences are built. During the past few years, the town has advanced significantly and is essentially a suburb of Athens. Attiki Odos improved the access to the city center and other parts of Attica. Its population reaches about 12,000 people, and climbs to 30,000–50,000 during the summer. Rafina’s port is serving ferries to the southern part of Evia as well as most of the Cyclades and is the second largest port of Attica, after Piraeus.
