Kalliga / Karamanlaki square was renowned architect Doxiadis' case study to the Greek state on how to raise apartment buildings in Athens (i.e., with front porches/gardens, street trees, durable materials, and access to urban planned squares). From the 1920s to the 1980s, the neighborhood was shaped as one of the most exclusive in the city, bringing together prominent merchants and people of letters and arts. Although in the last 30 years the consequences of anarchic immigration and the economic crisis hit the area, Karamanlaki Square stood still: a good number of old owners never left. Today interest in Athens is global, and Kalliga / Karamanlaki square is being rediscovered by a new bourgeois-bohemian generation as a living museum of early last century and interwar architecture at (still) affordable prices.
