Its municipal area, covering 108.84 km², is one of the largest in the province. Situated inland, just about 20 km from the coast, Onda is positioned in the intermediate zone between the Sierra de Espadán and the plain of La Plana, extending to the Mediterranean Sea. This location makes Onda a natural strategic entry point to the Sierra de Espadán from the coast, influencing the history of Onda and explaining the significance of its castle. Two rivers traverse Onda—the Mijares River to the north, away from the urban core, and the Sonella River to the south, bordering the town. The Sichar reservoir, constructed in the course of the Mijares River, is also within the municipal area. The highest peak in the municipal area is Montí, reaching 608m within Onda's boundaries. However, in reality, the peak is located in the municipal area of Tales and reaches 612m. A mound of 284m, atop which the castle is situated, overlooks the town. The landscape is characterized by the presence of Mediterranean forest (pines, oaks, cork oaks, and some strawberry trees), carob trees, olive trees, almond trees, and, above all, citrus fruits—especially orange trees. Extensive areas of the municipal area are dedicated to the cultivation of oranges.
