Deià is a sunny town located on the western coast of Mallorca, a 20-minute drive from Sóller. Many beautiful houses, villas and country estates in Deià offer outstanding views to the Tramuntana Mountains and the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean. Deià is dotted with shops, hotels, cafés and restaurants, and it holds a weekly market with local products and crafts. Known as “a village of artists”, it is a cosmopolitan enclave. It has attracted artists for many years, being the source of inspiration for renowned literary, musical and pictorial works. Continuing with its creative tradition, the town holds the Deià International Music Festival since 1978. These prestigious chamber-music performances run from June to September, allowing their public to enjoy select musical pieces in idyllic settings. Deià’s feast of Sant Joan, the town’s patron saint, takes place around June 24th, with all kinds of recreational activities which fuse tradition and modernity. Permanent cultural highlights include the house-museum of Robert Graves, famous British poet and author of “I, Claudius”, who lived in the town for many years starting in 1929 and is buried in its cemetery; the Son Marroig house-museum, dedicated to the belongings and art collected by its owner, Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria, distinguished scholar of the Balearic Islands and generous protector of its nature; and the Archaeological Museum of Deià, which displays remains found at local digging sites. The town’s privileged location allows the most adventurous to enjoy sea and mountain sports. If you are looking to simply relax, you can do so at Cala Deià, a picturesque pebble beach with a small jetty, which delights bathers with its calm turquoise waters. Near this cove you find wonderful vantage points to the sea and the mountains, and a gastronomic offer that will not disappoint you.
