Saldes is a mountainous municipality comprising the settlements of Saldes, Maçaners, and Espà. The Pedraforca peak is visible from anywhere in the municipality, constantly presiding over daily life. It has just over 300 inhabitants and an area of 66.56 km². It is located in the northwest of the Berguedà region, in one of the most scenically privileged valleys. A municipality of mountainous terrain, to the north lies the Cadí mountain range, to the south the Ensija mountain range, and to the west the Pedraforca. The Saldes River runs through the valley between them. The historical heritage is as important as it is ancient. A dolmen dating from 1800 to 1400 BC, a 9th-century monastery, an 11th-century castle, and various churches from the 11th, 13th, and later centuries. Thanks to the fact that a large part of the territory is under various types of protection, one can enjoy significant natural richness, both in plant and animal species. The leisure activities that can be carried out are those typical of its surroundings; it has numerous trails and paths for hiking or mountain biking, of all difficulty levels; the Pedraforca walls are a place to practice climbing. In autumn, the forests produce a wide variety of edible mushrooms, and restaurants offer dishes to sample them. In winter, mountain skiing and/or snowshoeing excursions in the Ensija mountain range are popular activities. Throughout the year, one can enjoy a great legacy of traditions and festivals. It has restaurants, hotels, and campsites, a swimming pool and sports court, an adventure park, a pharmacy and medical services, a bakery, a butcher shop, grocery stores, and a gas station.
