Eixample is a neighborhood developed from the second half of the nineteenth century and was built by the bourgeoisie through the acquisition of plots and the construction of modernist and neoclassical buildings, many of which housed the residences of part of the upper class of the city. The name comes from the main monument of the neighborhood which is the Basilica of the Sagrada Família. It is considered the masterpiece of the architect Antoni Gaudí and the maximum exponent of the Catalan modernist architecture, being the most visited monument in Spain. Gaudí Avenue crosses the neighborhood, linking the Sagrada Família with another primordial work of Catalan modernism: the Hospital de Sant Pau, by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Both buildings have been declared World Heritage Sites by Unesco. A strong point of the Sagrada Família neighborhood is its standard of living and quality of life. The streets are quiet and residential, mostly inhabited by locals. It is a central neighborhood with all kinds of services and stores nearby, and a good connection in terms of public transport.
