The ancient parish of Getxo is a municipality in the coast province of Biscay, in the Basque Country. It is located on the right bank of the estuary of Bilbao, at the mouth of Ibaizábal-Nervión river. It is part of the region of Greater Bilbao and the Bilbao metropolitan area. Las Arenas and Neguri emerged in the late nineteenth century as a residential area of the Basque industrial bourgeoisie. The district is characterized by Neguri mansions that, were built to house the cream of the bourgeoisie, still today, a residential area with luxury homes. Neguri´s name, was created by Resurrección María Azkue, former named Aretxetaurre. Neguri comes from the fusion of two Basque words: Negua and Hiri (winter and city respectively).
