The city of Tarragona is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It is known for its mild climate all year round and for its thousand years of history. The ancient Tarraco, founded by the Romans and the symbol of modern Tarragona, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. The city also has many monuments, such as the Cathedral, the Rambla Nova, Tarragona's main commercial thoroughfare, which leads to the Balcó del Mediterrani, a viewpoint over the sea, and the port, one of the most important in Spain. Tarragona also offers a wide range of services, from the Rovira i Virgili University and the Public Library, to exquisite Michelin-starred restaurants just a few kilometres away, as well as its many street markets and shopping centres. We must not forget its traditional festivals, such as the Castells Competition and the International Dixieland Festival (jazz festival), the Easter Week in Tarragona, declared of great national interest by the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Spanish State, the International Fireworks Competition and the Santa Tecla festivities. Tarragona also offers a wide range of leisure and cultural activities for all ages: museums, theatres, all kinds of water sports, golf courses and long walks in its parks and gardens. In the surrounding area, the town of Salou is home to Port Aventura, a theme park, water park, golf course and four hotels. It is the most visited theme park in Spain. Tarragona is also 10 km from Reus Airport and 86 km from Barcelona International Airport.
