In progressBarbate is located in the vicinity that the Greeks called Hercules columns. This bright white city, linked since antiquity to the sea and fishing, is organized around its picturesque fishing port. With many prehistoric footprints in the Sierra del Reton (with traces of schematic paint; anthropomorphic burials and the dolmens of Cao Arado), it was the Phoenicians who made Barbate an export port, implanting the tuna fishing system, which continues to be used to this day. With the Roman Empire, the city experienced its period of greatest splendour, becoming a prosperous enclave due to the fishing and salting industry. Since the Visigoth period, the city has kept the hermitage of San Ambrosio, in the heart of the natural park, as well as El Palomar de la Brea, an 18th-century public treasure transformed into a hotel. The beaches are heavenly and ideal for swimming and water sports. Carmen beach is located next to the harbour (inside the village), there is a large promenade and where it is usual to practice cane fishing, kite surfing or rowing.
