The district of Las Corts1 (in Catalan and officially Les Corts; incorrectly Las Corts[citation needed]) is the fourth of Barcelona's districts. It is located in the west of the city, bordering the districts of Sarriá-San Gervasio to the north, Ensanche to the east and Sants-Montjuic to the southeast, and the municipalities of Hospitalet de Llobregat to the south, Esplugas de Llobregat to the west and San Justo Desvern to the northwest. It is the third smallest district with 6.08 km², after Gracia and Ciudad Vieja, and the least populated (82,588 inhabitants in 2005). Its density of 13,584 inhabitants/km² places it below the city average. The district has its origins in the former municipality of Les Corts de Sarrià, which became independent from Sarrià in 1836, both of which were annexed to the city of Barcelona by the 1897 aggregation decree. The district has traditionally been divided into 10 neighbourhoods: Camp de la Creu, Camp Vell, Can Batllori, Can Sol de Baix, Centre, Can Bacardí, La Mercè, Pedralbes, Sant Ramon and Zona Universitària. The proposal presented by the city council in 2006 - La Barcelona dels barris (lit. The Barcelona of the neighbourhoods) - on the reorganisation of the neighbourhoods divides the district into 3 neighbourhoods (Les Corts, La Maternitat and Sant Ramon, and Pedralbes), considering that the 10 traditional ones are more like neighbourhoods due to their size and divides them in turn into 14 statistical zones.
