Saturnia

History

Saturnia is a beautiful medieval village in the heart of Tuscany Maremma, with long history, traditions, nice food and beautiful nature. This area is famous for the presence of archaeological sites, unspoiled landscapes, delicious gastronomy and, warm waters of the millenary thermal spring, much appreciated since the Etruscan and the Roman area.

A veil of mistery is wrapped around the origins of Saturnia. The legend says that the city arose from the hands of the god Saturn and that its name comes from the god himself. The god, tired of the constant quarrels of humans, threw a bolt of lightning into a volcano, creating a river of sulphurous water that flowed through valleys, mountains and plains, restoring peace.

Other legends from the Middle Ages, narrate that the devil, leaving the underground, was coming out from this place, making this land full of bewitched waters, which went to settle in steaming and boiling pools, with a sharp satanic smell in the air (caused by sulfur).

The thermal waters

Located in the municipality of Manciano, a few kilometers from Saturnia, we find the famous Saturnia waterfalls, also known as Del Mulino or Del Gorello. This wonderful and wild oasis of peace can be visited for free and without time limits. It is among the most fascinating in the world, as well as the best known for its therapeutic properties of its waters.

A spectacular and evocative naturalistic site, to regenerate body and mind. In fact, the water flows in the underground path, slowly filtering through the micro cracks in the rock, and then flows back up, enriched with minerals. An unforgettable show of contrasts between the pure white of travertine rocks and the thermal blue of the water. At any time of day and night, in summer as well as in winter, it is possible to be embraced by vapors of warm thermal waters and be conquered by the beauty of this unspoiled landscape on the background.
