In recent months, we are discovering how varied the territory of Tuscany Maremma is. We got to know the Metalliferous Hills, Amiata Mountain, the Maremma countryside and the Silver Coast. Today, we visit Castiglione della Pescaia, one of the most beautiful Italian seaside villages, and its suggestive surroundings.
Castiglione della Pescaia is an ancient, charming fishing village guarded by a 15th century castle. The upper part is the medieval heart enhanced by characteristic streets that lead to the Rocca (castle). Here you can enjoy the wonderful panorama and visit the beautiful S. Giovanni Battista church.
The lower side of the village hosts beaches, clubs, restaurants and shops. Every evening, fishing boats dock at the small port. The sea is crystal clear and there is a long, gold, sandy beach. Every year, Castiglione della Pescaia wins the prestigious Blue Flags and Legambiante 5 Sails for its commitment in protecting the environment.
In summer, Castiglione della Pescaia becomes the queen of Tuscany Maremma nightlife. Cultural and sporting events entertain both adults and kids. For example, there are international regattas organized by the local sailing club. In August the famous “Palio Marinaro” takes place, a competition between rioni on rowing boats. Another important event is the Sea Film Festival held in September.
Everyone can choose his/her favourite beach: sandy and rocky beaches, equipped beaches and free areas. Punta Capezzolo, Riva del Sole, Rocchette are among the most beautiful and unspoiled Italian beaches. Since the 1950s, Roccamare and Punta Ala have been known for hosting luxury villas of international celebrities, well-known entrepreneurs and politicians. Roccamare is a pine forest with a reserved beach and a gated community. Here, Roger Moore, Italo Calvino and the Ferragamo family, among others, spent their holidays. The elegant Punta Ala offers a tourist harbour, a golf club and several super-exclusive beach clubs.
The Castiglionese countryside looks like the typical postcard image of Tuscany: sunflower fields, long avenues of cypresses, unspoiled nature. To the east of this area, there is the Daccia Botrona nature reserve. Here is the Multimedia Museum. If you are a nature lover and you like birdwatching, then you can’t miss it!
The hamlets of Pian di Rocca, Pian d’Alma, Ampio and Macchiascandona are quiet areas surrounded by greenery and close to the sea. Here, there are farmhouses, restaurants with a 0 km cuisine, panoramic villas, and Tuscan-style houses.
The Etruscan Vetulonia once was an aristocratic maritime city. Today, it is no longer bathed by Lake Prile, but its glorious past remained. The historical heritage is proved by tombs built by the Etruscans in the hills and by the “domus” (houses) discovered within the village. The Archaeological Museum is definitely worth a visit.
Finally, do not miss the villages of Tirli and Buriano, between the hills and the sea. The first one is known for its rustic cuisine and “Locana La Luna”. This is a restaurant loved by VIPs such as the pop star Shakira and her footballer husband Piquè, but also Alex Zanardi, and many other athletes and politicians. Everybody loves Buriano because of the medieval castle and the splendid panoramic view of Tuscany Maremma.
