Summer or winter, Menorca never fails to thrill those that know her many secrets – the island is a well-loved destination for holiday makers and home buyers who are delighted by the many activities to be enjoyed throughout the year. In the warmer months life on the island revolves around sun, sea, outdoor living, visitors and holidays. In contrast the winter months are more intimate, quieter days, fewer people and time for neighbours and friends who also love the island year-round, it is a time to discover, walk, cycle and enjoy having the island to yourselves. Naturally at the end of each season the opposite season is longed for! Buy a home, be it a country house, villa or flat on the island with the local real estate agent Engel & Völkers Menorca and reap the many pleasures of this incredible Mediterranean island.
The summer season in Menorca lasts from May to the end of October, these are the months that homeowners and visitors come for the sun, to enjoy the wonderful beaches, the crystal-clear waters, to sail, to swim, to discover the coast and caves kayaking, to have fun and spend quality time with those that matter. For those that work it is the busy season and a welcome hive of activity. You will find plenty going on in local hotels, the restaurants, bars and shops open until late offering their enticing goods and promising the chance to chill or to have a party. Summer is characterised by the many leisure activities, numerous events, celebrations, festivals and lively nightlife. The most important festivals taking place in June are the brilliant celebrations of Sant Joan, when there will be events taking place across the island, however, the main party is in Ciutadella and symbolises the beginning of summer and is dominated by horses and crowds. Then there is the "Fiesta de la mare Deu de Gracia" in Mahón, the island's capital, in honour of the patron saint of Mahón. The Cranc Music Festival is at the end of September with all types of music and in Es Claustre there is live music and DJ´s throughout the year. Right at the end of summer is the Capllonch craft market held at night in Ciutadella. Autumn is also a great time to discover some homemade produce, such as the Mahon Cheese, wine or gin right where it is produced. You might be surprise to learn that Menorca is also a starlight destination, be one of the first to see the Draconids towards the end of October (the first star showers of autumn) from Son Saura or the Macarella cove.
The winter months from November to April also have many sunny moments and sometimes up to 5 hours of sunshine in any one day. Average temperatures are between 9 to 15 °C, many hotels and small shops are closed during the low season, but the island is still a great venue for sporting and leisure activities, such as, hiking, cycling, horse riding and fishing. The island also has many incredible prehistoric sites to discover including talaiots, burial sites and a particularly fascinating necropolis in Cala Morell. Take a close look at Mahon and Ciutadella, go back to the gin distillery! Try a pair of the iconic Avarca shoes or go and look at how they are made. Learn all about the flora and fauna at the S’Albufera Grau Nature Reserve. Some of Menorca's most traditional activities also take place during the winter months, our estate agents recommend you check out the Christmas markets and the lovely Christmas lights, which go on the first Sunday in December, check out the Sant Antoni celebrations on the 17th of January, also known as 'diada', and the various concerts taking place. Visit the museums or explore the whole island and take a tour on foot, on horseback or by bike around the island along the Cami de Cavalls pathway, which encircles the entire island.
