Simply unique - Cape Favaritx and its lighthouse!

The Favaritx lighthouse was completed in 1922 and was the first one on the island to have a concrete tower. The 28-metre-high tower is a distinctive white with a black spiral stripe encircling it. The highest point of the tower is 47 metres above sea level and the light can be seen for up to 16 nautical miles of the coast. Shipwrecks in the first decade of the 20th Century were the reason for the construction of the Favaritx and punta Nati lighthouses, which now illuminate the north coast. Namely the vessel ‘Isaac Pereire’ was wrecked close to cala Mesquida in 1906 and the ‘General Chanzy’ sank off punta Nati in 1910. Today the lighthouse houses a permanent exhibition of maritime signals/signalling used for the orientation of sea going vessels and includes information relating to lighthouses, lights and foghorns. The area of and around the cape of Favaritx is within the s’Albufera des Grau natural park and it is both unique and beautiful with its distinct black shale covered rocks and lack of plant life, and there is also the "Cos des Sindic", a temporary pond made up of rainwater and sea water (note that the perimeter of the pond is closed off so that its special ecosystem is preserved). The long-distance hiking trail "Cami de Cavalls" (also nearby) encircles the entire island and provides a variety of walks and hikes.
