Mallorcan summers are legendary: lazy days at the beach, swimming and snorkeling in the crystalline sea, and, in the evening, after a delicious dinner of Mallorcan delicacies, there is always plenty to do. Despite COVID-19 regulations, this summer still has a lot to offer. Although it is important to check for updates and respect social distancing measures, you should get out and enjoy the music, sports, and cultural events taking place across the island. Here is our guide to our top 6 summer spectacles in Mallorca - enjoy yourselves!
From 31st July to 7th August, the Copa del Rey is an unmissable yachting regatta at the Real Club Náutico in Palma, the island’s capital city. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the city’s bay, the Copa del Rey, launched in 1982, is one of the most prestigious sailing races in the world. This year, the 39th edition, is highly anticipated as last year’s event was canceled. 11 fleets will compete, with over 100 teams already signed up. Set sail, and don’t miss it!
In the island’s chic southwest, the glamorous hotspot of Puerto Portals holds its annual Sunset Market in the golden glow of a Mediterranean sunset. A shopper’s paradise, the seventh edition of this traditional summer market takes place every Wednesday and Thursday, from 6 pm to midnight, until 19th August. With the fresh sea breeze to keep you cool, browse the Mediterranean-style stalls, which offer fashion, accessories, and artisanal products. Set in the exclusive marina of Portals, you will be spoiled for choice for restaurants, cafés and bars once you have shopped till you dropped.
Music lovers will be delighted by the five nights of live concerts starting on 31st July. Set in the most modern marina in the Mediterranean, Port Adriano, on the southwestern tip of the island, the opening night welcomes the Dire Straits Experience to the stage, featuring the famous British rock band’s original saxophonist, Chris White, who has also played with Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger. On 2nd August, Port Adriano welcomes Kool and the Gang, 70s funk sensations. Time for a celebration! Other concerts include La Oreja de Van Gogh on 7th August, Hombres G on 13th, and FSO Big Band on 21st August.
Every summer, the magical mountain village of Deià in the west of the island hosts the International Music Festival, from 3rd June to 31st September. Dedicated to chamber music since 1978, the festival is based in Son Marroig, an impressive country estate and monastery in the dramatic Tramuntana Mountains. The concert program features a plethora of performances from national and international soloists, groups, and composers. Classical music in a spellbinding setting.
Considered the most important music festival in the Balearic Islands, Mallorca Live Festival´s spectacular stages have seen headline acts like The Prodigy, Primal Scream, and Two Door Cinema Club plus a plethora of DJs and local bands. Although it is a more low-key format this year, the usual location in the old Aquapark in Calvia, close to Magaluf, is holding a diverse range of concerts and gigs this summer. Check out the line-up here. And the great news is that next year, the epic rock band Muse will headline, and the usual Mallorca Live Festival format will return, with huge stages and sound systems that have been making headlines for over five years.
Now you have all your summer events lined up, all you have to do is soak up the music, the sunshine and the warm atmosphere. Have a fantastic summer!
