The name Brandenbaum became common in the 18th century, and the area served as a border and customs station to Mecklenburg. The nearby Palinger Heide was a popular excursion spot for the people of Lübeck. The district also has several parks, including the Stadtpark, Drägerpark, and Eschenburgpark, each with its own unique features and history. The Burgtorfriedhof cemetery and the adjacent Ehrenfriedhof are notable for their historic gravestones and memorials.
